Govt pays Rs. 1 m compensation to Angulana victims’ parents
Lives lost cannot be evaluated in terms of money and severe
punishment would be meted out to those responsible for the murders of
the two young men of Angulana, President Mahinda Rajapaksa told their
parents at Temple Trees yesterday.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa met parents of Dinesh Tharanga
and Danushka Udayakantha who died in a tragic accident in
Angulana recently. The Police Department presented Rs.
500,000 as compensation to each family at Temple Trees
yesterday. The cheque was handed over by the President.
Ministers Milinda Moragoda and Jeewan Kumaratunga, IGP
Jayantha Wickramaratna and Western Province Councillor
Duminda Silva were also present. |
The parents of Dinesh Tharanga and Danushka Udayakantha who had died
mysteriously after being taken into police custody who met President
Rajapaksa, implored on the President to ensure that such a fate would
not befall on other people of the country in the future.
The President said he would see that such young lives would not be
lost in the future and that the Government would take all steps to
ensure that such tragic incidents would not take place again.
The value of a young life could not be estimated and severe
punishment would be given to the policemen responsible for the crime and
the due attention of the Government had been drawn to the incident.
Some police officers had tarnished the image of the police force and
the Government had directed the authorities to investigate the matter
impartially. The President also presented a compensation of Rs. 500,000
each to the families of the two youths of Angulana who were killed. |
