Govt pays Rs. 1 m compensation to Angulana victims’ parents

Lives lost cannot be evaluated in terms of money and severe punishment would be meted out to those responsible for the murders of the two young men of Angulana, President Mahinda Rajapaksa told their parents at Temple Trees yesterday.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa met parents of Dinesh Tharanga and Danushka Udayakantha who died in a tragic accident in Angulana recently. The Police Department presented Rs. 500,000 as compensation to each family at Temple Trees yesterday. The cheque was handed over by the President. Ministers Milinda Moragoda and Jeewan Kumaratunga, IGP Jayantha Wickramaratna and Western Province Councillor Duminda Silva were also present.

The parents of Dinesh Tharanga and Danushka Udayakantha who had died mysteriously after being taken into police custody who met President Rajapaksa, implored on the President to ensure that such a fate would not befall on other people of the country in the future.

The President said he would see that such young lives would not be lost in the future and that the Government would take all steps to ensure that such tragic incidents would not take place again.

The value of a young life could not be estimated and severe punishment would be given to the policemen responsible for the crime and the due attention of the Government had been drawn to the incident.

Some police officers had tarnished the image of the police force and the Government had directed the authorities to investigate the matter impartially. The President also presented a compensation of Rs. 500,000 each to the families of the two youths of Angulana who were killed.
