SLIIT, Angulana investigations:

No interference will be tolerated

The Government will not allow any political elements or power to interfere and hamper the investigation process in regard to the abduction of SLIIT student Nipuna Ramanayake allegedly by the CCD Chief’s son Ravindu Gunawardane and also the alleged killing of two youths by police in Angulana.

Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana said there are over 74,000 police personnel serving in 615 police stations islandwide.

By the wrong doing of a few several police personnel, we cannot generalize and say that the Police Department as a whole is rotten.

He said the President had requested the authorities to submit a progress report of the investigation process. “The President immediately summoned the IGP and senior police officials to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the culprits before justice,” he added.

The investigation is proceeding successfully and soon the culprits will be identified, he said.

Minister Abeywardane noted that there are certain political elements trying to exploit the situation for political gains.

“The Government is conducting a clean investigation without the interference of any politician. We request political parties instead of blaming the government to assist the authorities to bring the culprits before justice,” he said.

He assured that no power will be allowed to intervene or hamper the investigation.

Speaking on the alleged leak in the G.C.E. A/L Biology (2009) paper he said this was another rumor to mislead the students and parents.

“It was said that a model Biology paper which a private tuition master distributed among his students was very similar to the GCE A/L Biology paper conducted by the Examination Department.”

”The tuition master had distributed a model paper during the revision session on the Biology subject in Matara. The tuition master had stated that these questions were only for practising for the exam and not expecting the same question in the exam.

In the multiple choice paper, the tuition master has given clues to the students from his experience. One or two multiple choice questions were similar to the Biology paper conducted by the Examination Department.

This doesn’t mean that the Biology paper was leaked. It was a coincident and nothing to do with leaking the paper before the exam”, the Minister remarked.
