Seenigama Devale 42nd Esala Festival

The annual 42nd Esala Festival of Seenigama Devol Devale in Hikkaduwa
will be held from August 23 to September 4 starting with 'Kap Planting'
at the premises on August 21.
All night 'Pirith' chanting will be held on August 28 followed by the
'Sangika Dana' on 29. A cultural show would be held on August 29 night.
The traditional Devol Perahera with the low country and up country
dancing troupes accompanied by 15 elephants will proceed to Purana
Ranpath Maha Viharaya, Telwatte on August 30 night. The day perahera on
August 31 will proceed to the Tourist Resort Hikkaduwa. Two night
Peraheras on September 1 and 2 will parade in the Seenigama area.
Forty injured as bus overturns

Forty passengers were injured when a private bus heading to
Karabugashandiya from Kiribathgoda skidded off the road and over turned
at Ambalama junction in Biyagama on Tuesday night.
According to the sources at Sapugaskanda Police, the injured were
admitted to the Biyagama, Kiribathgoda and Ragama hospitals.
Initial investigations revealed that the driver has lost control of
the bus while he was having an altercation with a group of passengers.
An eyewitness told the Daily News that the driver lost control of the
bus as a passenger tried to strangle him. Hospital sources confirmed
that no passenger is in serious condition.
Timber racketeers rape forest reserve

Illegal timber felling is on the increase in Moragahaulpotha
reservation of the Knuckles range in Laggala electorate causing an
environmental problem in the area.
An organised gang with the support of powerful hands, is involved in
this timber racket the villagers alleged.
Timber loaded lorries are plying daily without any obstruction, they
said.
Owner killed, house burgled

Armed robbers killed the owner of a house which they broke into in
Sama Mawatha Wellawe yesterday morning.
The robbers also got away with the cash and jewellery in the house.
Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said five men arrived in a van
for the robbery.
Bar Association shocked
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka expresses its shock and horror over
the numerous instances of police brutality against unarmed civilians, in
particular the killing of two youth by police officers attached to the
Angulana Police Station last week and the violent attack on a young
student of the Sri Lanka Institute of Technology in Malabe in the
previous week by a team of police officers including a senior
Superintendent of Police.
Whilst condemning these acts of brutality and violence with the
greatest vehemence at its command, the Bar Association emphasises that
these acts of violence have caused revulsion amongst society.
New books, cd
Several works of creative literature from Jayalath Ravi Dissanayake
(Land Ministry Secretary) would be unveiled today at an event scheduled
to be held at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, Ananda Samarakoon
auditorium at 5.00 p.m.
Two books, with one containing lyrics and other stories would be
released including another Compact Disc titled 'Nonimena Pahan'.
Seminar
The Public Lectures and Seminars Committee of the Association of
Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka (AATSL) will conduct a seminar on
"Accountants responsibility on detection and prevention of frauds" for
its members and other interested personnel on Friday, August 21 at 5
p.m. This will be held at the Prof. Lakshman R. Watawala Auditorium of
AATSL.
Panel discussion
The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo will conduct a panel discussion
on the life and works of eminent Indian Play Wright Habib Tanvir and a
talk by Parakrama Niriella. The playwright discussants: Film Director
Dharmasiri Bandaranayke and Prof. (emeritus) S. Mounaguru, Department of
Fine Arts, University of Batticaloa.
The panel discussion will be held on Friday August 21 at 6 p.m. at
the Indian Cultural Centre, 133, Baduddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 4.

The 81st Annual General Meeting of the Child Protection Society of
Ceylon will be at 4 p.m. on Friday, August 28 at the Mahaweli Centre
Auditorium, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.
The meeting will be presided by the President of the Child Protection
Society S. S. Wijeratne. British High Commissioner Dr. Peter Richard

Blood donation
A blood donation campaign and a multi-purpose community service
program jointly organised by the Slave Island Police Station and the
Lions Club of Colombo Maitland (District 306 C-1) will be held at the
Slave Island Police station on August 21 and 22.

following a dengue eradication program in the Police quarters complex,
on Saturday, August 22 an eye clinic will be held at 9 a.m. followed by
an Ayurveda clinic, the distribution of wheel chairs to a group of
disabled persons and a job orientation program for youth.
