Water for drought-hit Yala

Supplying water to the numerous waterholes in the park

The Wildlife Department has taken immediate steps to provide drinking water to animals in the Yala National Park which is in the grip of a severe drought.

This follows a directive issued by Environment and Natural Resources Minister Champika Ranawaka to ensure a round the clock water supply to animals in view of the drought conditions prevailing in the South. Accordingly water bowsers are being used by the Wildlife Department to transport water and fill the tanks and ponds in the sanctuary while water from the Menik Ganga is pumped into the Yala Reservoir to keep it to the brim round the clock a press release issued by the Environment and National Resources Ministry said.

The release said the filling procedure is carried out at night with utmost care and precaution since elephants, leopards and bears frequent the water holes round the clock in search of water.

An eight member team of Wildlife officials have been deployed round the clock to efficiently carry out this work.
