A Sri Lankan enroute to Bangkok trying to smuggle out 36 kilos of
'Birds Nest' illegally in a 1.30 a.m. flight yesterday was nabbed by a
team led by Deputy Director of Customs Malie Piyasena before he could
emplane from the Bandaranaike International Airport.
As the suspect submitted his baggage to the airline counter at the
Airport Deputy Director Malie Piyasena had felt suspicious about his
behaviour and subjected the baggage to a thorough search and found the
'Birds Nest', which is a conserved item, concealed in it.
Piyasena said Birds Nest is a very expensive item much in demand
among connoisseurs and is valued at nearly Rs. 300,000 per kilo.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had planned to sell it to a
Chinese national in Bangkok.
He had carried the items to Bangkok undetected on two earlier
occasions.
Piyasena was assisted by Assistant superintendents C.L. Ambagahawatta
and P.N.W. Jayasiri in the detection.
