Menik Farm area:

Govt develops drainage system

A two-phase project will be implemented to develop the drainage system in welfare centres in the Menik Farm area, said Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe making a statement during the Adjournment Debate in Parliament yesterday on the situation of Internally Displaced Persons’ camps in Vavuniya.

Under the first phase the drainage system in zones 1, 3 and 4 will be developed while the second phase will constitute the development of zones 5, 6A and 6B. Zones with large populations and potentially severe drainage issues are included in phase one. The rain water disposal system is to be completed by September 15, the Minister said. The UNDP, UNOPS and UNHCR are associated with these projects. Steps will also be taken to initiate a hospital waste disposal system for the Menik Farm area.

The Minister also informed the House that there are no major health related issues in the camps and that all health centres are functioning at normal capacity.
