Attack on Nipuna Ramanayake, SLIIT student:

Court remands 11 police personnel

The Crime Division conducting investigations into the alleged assault on Malabe SLIIT Student Nipuna Ramanayake yesterday produced eleven suspects, all police personnel, three Sub Inspectors, a Police Sergeant and seven Police constables, before the Kaduwela Additional District Judge Mahanil Prasantha de Silva and remanded them till August 31. Crime Division DIG Anura Senanayake who appeared for the prosecution with SP Neil Hettiarachchi submitted to court that the 12th suspect Ravindu Gunawardena, son of former CCD Director Vaas Gunawardena, had been warded at the Colombo South Hospital under the supervision of the Police.

China, Lanka tie for being most optimistic:

Sri Lanka topped an Asian list of people most satisfied with their lives.Sri Lanka topped the list with 93 percent while Taiwan took the last spot with only 28 percent in an Asia Pacific consumer study by the advertising firm Grey Group.

Forex reserves up by 40 percent

The country’s foreign exchange reserves which were at a low ebb in March had now increased by almost forty percent which is a record increase, said State Revenue and Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa presented ‘Wings’ to six new pilots of SriLankan Airlines at a ceremony at Temple Trees yesterday. The six new Junior First Officers - Eshantha Kaluarachchi, Sagara Wirasinha, Madhini Chandradasa, Sujeeshwa Abeysekera, Sandesh Gunasekera, and Prasad Wickremasinghe - who completed a rigorous training program at Sri Lankan Airlines, also received certificates from Minister of Ports and Aviation Chamal Rajapaksa. They included one lady Junior First Officer, who is the fourth woman to join the ranks of pilots of the National Carrier. Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Minister Aviation Sarath Kumara Gunarathna, Chairman of SriLankan Airlines, Nishanta Wickremasinghe, Members of the Board of the airline, and parents of the new Junior First Officers.
