Sri Lanka established as fine quality gem, jewellery exporter

Focus on niche markets vital

Sri Lanka needs to focus on niche markets by exporting fine quality stones as mass marketing is a challenge to the country. The country has established itself as a country exporting exquisite fine quality gems and jewellery and it is important to capitalize on this, Acting Deputy Director General National Gem and Jewellery Authority Ajith Perera said.

Lot of opportunities for IT in Sri Lanka:

Dell 11G server launched

“Sri Lanka is emerging as one of the top two countries in South Asia promoting the use and development of IT. One of the reasons for the development of computer use and IT was that the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) has actively encouraged this sector and also the GOSL has named the year 2009 the year of ICT”, said Regional Managing Director, South Asia, Developing Markets Group, Dell Global Business Centre, Varinderjit Singh at the Dell 11G server launch yesterday.

FAO project on post-harvest fish handling

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has formulated a project based on the Government’s post-tsunami strategy and program for the reconstruction and development of the marine fisheries sector, which aims at ‘building back better’, FAO Representative in Colombo Patrick Evans told Daily News Business.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa presented ‘Wings’ to six new pilots of SriLankan Airlines at a ceremony at Temple Trees yesterday. The six new Junior First Officers - Eshantha Kaluarachchi, Sagara Wirasinha, Madhini Chandradasa, Sujeeshwa Abeysekera, Sandesh Gunasekera, and Prasad Wickremasinghe - who completed a rigorous training program at Sri Lankan Airlines, also received certificates from Minister of Ports and Aviation Chamal Rajapaksa. They included one lady Junior First Officer, who is the fourth woman to join the ranks of pilots of the National Carrier. Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Minister Aviation Sarath Kumara Gunarathna, Chairman of SriLankan Airlines, Nishanta Wickremasinghe, Members of the Board of the airline, and parents of the new Junior First Officers.
