CID officer in bribery net

An indictment has been filed against a CID officer before Colombo
High Court for allegedly accepting a bribe from a person to support him
to be released on bail from the Court, in March 2007.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption
filed indictment against Police Constable T.P.S. Amarandika de Alwis of
Menikhinna attached to the Criminal Investigation Department for
accepting a gratification of Rs. 50,000.
According to the indictment the PC allegedly accepted the
gratification from Derrick Buultjens of Welivita, Kaduwela on March 30,
2007 to help him obtain bail from the Court and also to get his bank
account reactivated that was frozen by Court.
According to the complain, the PC had accepted the bribe from
Buultjens who was suspected for misusing Rs. 3 million following the
sale of a house fraudulently. In his statement to the Bribery Commission
the suspect stated that he was arrested by three officers of the CID
based on a false allegation. Thereafter he was produced before Court and
remanded. Later the PC told the suspect that he could support him to
obtain bail from the Court.
When he said that he could not give money as his account was frozen
by the Court, the PC also promised to support him to reactivate the
frozen account. The PC gave his mobile phone number to the suspect to
call him when the bribe money was ready. Later the suspect made a
complaint before the Bribery Commission.
