Vidatha centres train IDPs in life skills
The Science and Technology Ministry through its Vidatha Resource
Centres scattered throughout the country has taken several measures to
help the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in the North and the East
provinces under the Program, Vadakkin Vasantham.
Technical equipment worth of Rs. 756,192 (Yoghurt incubators, bakery
technology ovens, vegetable dehydrators and wood gas stoves) have been
distributed in Mannar and Vavuniya districts to transfer technologies to
the needy people.
Many training programs on Soil Cement Manufacturing Process of the
National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERD) have been
held for IDPs to enable them to access technologies to build their own
shelters with the low cost housing construction technology.
Similarly training programs for science and technology officers
serving in Vidatha Resource Centres have been conducted on rice based
food product technology, fruit and vegetable based food product
technology, milk based food product technology and rice based noodles
product technology, in these districts to transfer technologies for the
needy people to uplift their livelihoods.
It is learnt that fresh milk is abundantly available in these areas
with no appropriate value addition being given to the resources.
It is expected that transfer of technologies for this fresh milk
would enhance the opportunity for the farmers to give value addition
with wide spectrum of products.
