Handicraft Exhibition in Kandy

Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Developers Trade and Industrial
Board has taken steps to conduct a handicraft Exhibition in Kandy with
the assistance of Handicraft Commercial Board, said SMED Director,
Renuka Rodrigo.
This exhibition which was named as Handicraft Expertise 2009,
National Handicraft Award Items Exhibition will be held from August 2 to
5 at the Kandy City Centre under the theme of “Inland Handicraft and
Foreign Market”. Because of this exhibition, handicraftsmen who have
been considered as bottom level entrepreneurs in handicrafts field will
have the direct approach of the local and foreign buyers.
AGM and get-together
The 6th AGM and fourth annual get-together of the Old Nalandians 2002
Group’s (X-Ncians 2002) will be held at the Angampitiya Grounds, Kotte
on Sunday, August 2 at 9 a.m.
Memorial lecture
The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport - Sri Lanka will
hold the Seventh John Diandas Memorial Lecture, “Solace for Land
Transportation in sri Lanka - Railway Electrification and Its Economics’
by Dr. Tilak Siyambalapitiya, Energy Consultant on Friday July 31 at
5.30 p.m. at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium, Institution of Engineers,
Sri Lanka, 120/15, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.
Seminar on Act
A seminar organised by the Indigenous Medicine Ministry to obtain the
contribution of intellectuals and veterans in the field for drafting the
Ayurveda Act to be presented in Parliament will be held at the Hector
Kobbekaduwa Agricultural Research and Training Institute Colombo on July
30 at 10 a.m.
E-Diploma in Human Rights
The E-Diploma in Human Rights conducted by the Centre for the Study
of Human Rights, University of Colombo (CSHR) will have its inauguration
ceremony on the July 30 at the Boardroom of the Faculty of Law,
University of Colombo.
Vice Chancellor of the Colombo University Prof. Kshanika
Hirimburegama, Director of the Centre for the Study of Human Rights
Prof. Ravindra Fernando, Senior Lecturer of the Faculty of Law and
Course Coordinator Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa and other dignitaries will
participate in the ceremony.
Lankaputhra Bank in Batticaloa
A branch of the Lanka Puthra Development Bank will be opened in the
Batticloa district today under the re-awakening program of the
Government.
Senior Advisor to the President, Basil Rajapaksa, MP will open the
bank. The new branch of the bank has been set up at Central Road,
Batticaloa.
The Bank was launched with the aim of boosting the national economy.
The bank’s implementing several projects to promote the small and
medium scale industrial sector, notably among them, the Krushi Navodya,
Mahaweli loan scheme and the new comprehensive rural credit scheme.
Former Daily News journalist’s father dies
The funeral of J.R.J. Sri Nissanka (63), the father of former Daily
News staffer and present News Editor of Lakbima News, Jayantha Sri
Nissanka will take place at Batuwandara Cemetery today (July 29,
Wednesday) at 4.00 pm. His body is now lying at No.16/4 B1, Sirimal
Uyana, Polhena, Madapatha, Piliyandala (near David Peiris Factory).
The late J. R. J. Sri Nissanka was serving as the Private Secretary
to the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Felix Perera. He was a
public servant who had also served in the diplomatic service.
Book launch
Blood Heart, the Sinhala translation of the English novel by the same
name by Richard Tresillian translated by Sujeeva Dissanayake and Mahinda
Abeysundara will be launched today at the Mahaveli Centre, Colombo at
3.30 p.m. Lake House Chairman Veteran Journalist Bandula Padmakumara
will preside over the launching ceremony. Speakers will be Prof. Sunanda
Mahendra, Karunaratne Amarasinghe and Karunadasa Sooriyarachchi.
Kelaniya campus reopens
The University of Kelaniya will be reopened tomorrow, the Higher
Education Ministry sources said.
Accordingly the students are allowed to enter the university and
hostels from today. The Kelaniya University was closed following a clash
between university students and the residents of the area.
As a result of the clash, the university authorities decided to close
all faculties except the medical faculty. |
