The Government's 180 day Uthuru Vasanthaya electrification program of
the Northern Province will be launched with a new transformer with a
capacity of 50 MW to be installed at the Ulapola grid station Vavuniya,
an official of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said.
The new transformer |
This is under phase I of the electrification of the North. The
transformer which costs Rs. 20 million weighing 65 tons could provide
electricity to Vavuniya and a large surrounding area.
"The transformer in Ulapola at present provides 20 MWs of electricity
and it is unable to meet the demand in the area.
As a result there are a few breakdowns in the Northern Province as
the present supply of electricity is overloaded and insufficient and the
quality of the power supply was not up to standard.
With installation of the new transformer the problem will be solved
and it will provide power to the area surrounding as well. The CEB hopes
to increase the capacity in Ulapola grid station up to 60 MWs in the
near future", he said.
The project would be completed in 2010 and steps have been taken to
ensure that all development projects in the North will be provided with
power under the Government's 180 day Uthuru Vasanthaya program.
The transformer transported by road was moved from the Aniyakanda
grid station, Wattala under the supervision of General Managers; Ranjith
Gunawardhane and P.S.P. Mendis. |
