Over 3000 competitors for Mahaweli Games

Over 3000 athletes from nine Mahaweli Zones will take part in the
23rd Mahaweli Games which will be held today and tomorrow at Bakamuna
Ground, Moragahakanda starting at 9.00a.m. on both days.
These games are expected to be held on a grand scale and this will be
an open stage for sportsmen and women in the Mahaweli areas to give of
their best and enter the National arena, said Minister of Mahaweli
Development and Agrarian Services Maithripala Sirisena at a press
briefing held at the Mahaweli Center.
This meet has produced many sportsmen and women who at national
level, added Minister Sirisena. Walawa zone has won the overall
championship on most of the occasions (08) while Mahaweli H zone emerged
overall champions on five occasions. That includes the last three years
in a row.
Today, the field events will start at 10.00a.m. While netball,
tug-o-war and cycling events will be held tomorrow.
