Kandy Esala Perahera:

Over 6,000 Police personnel on duty

A police contingent of over 6000 personnel will be deployed for official (security) duties in Kandy during the Kandy Esala Pageant period, said DIG (Central Province) Gamini Navaratne. This will include 3500 personnel deployed from outstations, he said.

The Kandy Esala Pageant will commence with the ‘Kap planting’ ceremony at the four main devaleyas this morning (July 22).

The first Kumbal Perahera will commence on July 27 and the Pageant will conclude with the water cutting ceremony at the Getambe ferry and the Day Perahera on August 6. Police will be assisted by the Army, Navy and members of the Civil Defence Force in the security arrangements, DIG Navaratne said.

Earlier, IGP Jayantha Wickramaratne visited Kandy on Saturday (July 18) and reviewed the security arrangements planned during the Kandy Esala Pageant.

At a meeting held at the Kandy police station attended by top state and Police officials the IGP noted that arrangements should be made causing least inconvenience to the public visiting Kandy to view the pageant.
