Eheliyagoda Rugby Club clinch Mohan Ellawala Trophy
Eheliyagoda Rugby Club won the Mohan Ellawala Memorial Trophy with a
scintillating performance to beat the more fancied Buddhist College,
Talduwa by 15 points (three tries) to 12 (one try one goal) in the final
played at the Balangoda Public Grounds recently in front of a capacity
crowd.
It was the Buddhist College Talduwa who scored first with two tries,
but the Eheliyagoda players fought back very well in the second half
gallantly. Both teams played their hearts out and went man to man with
some bone crushing tackling. More than 200 participants from 10 clubs
took part in this tournament which was organised by the Sabaragamuwa
Province RFU and initiated by Arjun Dharmadasa (President Sabaragamuwa
RFU) assisted by K.S.P. Karunaratne (Rugby Development Officer
Sabaragamuwa (RFU) and Priyantha Gunaratne (Technical Officer).
The Chief Guest was Akila Ellawala (Ratnapura District SLFP
Organizer) while the Guest of Honour was Nimal Weerasingha (Mayor of
Balangoda). Ananda Jayaratna (Education Director), Indika Jayamanna
(Member of Pradeshiya Sabha) also graced the occasion. Results: Cup -
Eheliyagoda Rugby Club beat Buddhist College, Talduwa 15 points to 12.
Plate - Embilipitiya Rugby Club beat Kegalu School Rugby Club by 15
points to 5 and annexed the M.L.M. Aboosally Memorial Trophy. Bowl -
Sabaragamuwa University beat Talduwa Rugby Club by 22 points to 17 and
annexed The Nanda Ellawala Memorial Trophy. |
