Iran to host next NAM Summit
Leaders to the 15th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit on Thursday
decided to hold their next Summit in Iran in 2012.
The decision was unanimously approved by the leaders on the final day
of the summit, at NAM's Meeting of Heads of State or Government, held in
the Egyptian Red Sea city of Sharm el-Sheikh.
Iran will accordingly replace Egypt as the next chair country of NAM.
The Sharm el-Sheikh Summit opened on Wednesday after days of
preparatory ministerial meetings, drawing attendance by more than 100
member states and observer countries and organizations.
The Summit aimed to seek more solidarity among developing countries
to tackle major international and regional issues including the ongoing
world financial crisis.
Founded in September 1961, NAM now groups 118 member states, 16
observer countries and nine observer organizations. The Movement, which
includes nearly two-thirds of UN member countries and comprises 55
percent of the world population, focuses on striving for the interests
of developing countries all over the world. Xinhua |
