Keep Kandy clean
During the Esala Perahera almost 800,000 people visit Kandy. If every
person who visits Kandy bring a thin polythene bag and dump it there,
there will be 800,000 polythene bags in the town. This will lead to
contamination of soil, block drains and release toxic fumes if burnt and
contribute to the spread of Dengue. Kandy, already has difficulty in
managing garbage day-to-day.
Here are a few ways that you could ensure that your presence there,
will not damage the environment of this city:
*Let each person take with them materials which they would not need
to dispose in Kandy.
Bring back home your water bottles, lunch boxes, and your plastic or
paper mat that you use to sit on the roadside to watch the Perahera.
*Dispose all your degradable waste into the bins provided.
*Do not throw food or other material into Kandy Lake. It is too
precious to be spoiled through your irresponsible behaviour.
People and authorities in the Central Province have worked hard to
clean the city and the surrounding cities to welcome hundreds and
thousands of people who will visit to see the historical Esala Perahera
from different parts of the island and other countries. Therefore, it is
the duty of all visitors to ensure that they contribute to protect the
environment of our city of cultural value.
