Demise of a noble son of our soil
The death of Professor Anuradha Seneviratne will be felt not only in
the Central Province but also throughout Sri Lanka due to his reputation
and ability as a scholar unequal and above to any other in the recent
past. His death will be remembered by many who appreciated the rural Sri
Lankan image. His knowledge and ability to comprehend in five languages
is unique for a scholar of his calibre and age. The awards he was
bestowed during his lifetime over the years will never be compensated to
a person of such knowledge and versatility.
Professor
Anuradha Seneviratne |
As a school boy I recollect Professor Anuradha Seneviratne driving a
Voxwagon Beetle in Kandy and was seen and respected by the younger
generation as a person who was of the highest intellectual capacity. I
can remember that during that era he was recognized and held in high
esteem by all who believed in the rural Sri Lankan values. His image was
further strengthened by his typical localized Sinhala National dress
which was a hall mark of Professor Anuradha Seneviratne. His knowledge
of the history of our Central Province was clearly identified at many
interviews he gave regarding the historical value of our Province. It is
indeed ironic that his death coincides with the month of Esala, since I
remember the days that he gave his expert views and comments of the
historical Esala pageant of Kandy. His death has created a void in the
society by far and will be felt for many many years. Professor Anuradha
Seneviratne's library of books is a testimony to his knowledge and
understanding of our culture by far. I together with the people of the
Central Province convey our deepest sympathies to the family members,
specially his wife and his two sons. All the students of Professor
Anuradha Seneviratne during his long span in the University of
Peradeniya will no doubt be a fortunate breed since they were able to
know an interlect of the highest calibre.
"May this great son of our soil attain Nibbana".
Tikiri Kobbekaduwa
Governor - Central Province.
