President Rajapaksa’s move commended
Elmo RODRIGOPULLE
Sports-loving President Mahinda Rajapaksa came in for high praise
from the sports-loving public for requesting the Sri Lanka Broadcasting
Corporation to relay ball by ball commentaries on the on- going Test and
one-day series between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
In the past live commentaries were relayed only in English, with
Sinhala and Tamil commentators giving a short resume during breaks or at
the close of play. The man President Rajapaksa put in charge to see to
the Tamil broadcast was Moors Sports Club stalwart A.H.M Azwer. Azwer
has donned pads in the broadcasting business, relaying spots during the
game in the past.
Azwer, a Presidential Advisor is well versed in every aspect of the
game and his no punches pulled comments, intelligent reading of
situations and smooth flow describing of what is happening out in the
middle has been well received by listeners.
Thanks to the President, the broadcast in Tamil goes islandwide and
every cricket fan in far off places is able to listen and know what goes
on in the cricket.
Azwer is captaining an efficient commentary team in J. Yogaraja, A.
R. M. Jiffrey and N. M. Raja. What this foursome do not know about the
game is not worth knowing. It is not easy describing the positions in
the field and several other aspects. But this team has endeavoured to
keep the listeners glued to their radio sets with comments and
descriptions of high class.
Sri Lanka Cricket headed by yet another Presidential Advisor and
chairman D. Somachandra de Silva has given Azwer and his team all
encouragement to excel in their chosen field of sport. |
