Nugawela Central in historic win
L.B. Dissanayake, Senkadagala Sports Corrs.
Two brilliant individual performances by S.P.S. Amunugama (81 runs
and a match bag of 8 for 46) and S.N. Rajaguru (match bag of 11 for 127)
helped Nugawela Central College to record a historic eight wickets win,
the first outright victory in the series, over Wallala A Rathnayake
Central College in their annual cricket encounter for the C.W.W.
Kannangara Trophy, which ended at the Kandy Police grounds over the
weekend.
Batting first Nugawela Central College scored a formidable 257 runs
for 9 wicket declared. Good knocks from skipper Amunugama (81 with 13x4,
1x6), H. Kongahage (61 with 9x4, 2x6) and A.D. Abeyrathna (43 with 4x4)
helped the winners to accumulate this match winning total. R.Randika
(5/50) and A. Sankalpa (3/33) bowled best for the losers.
In reply the A. Rathnayake Central College players found it tough
going against some hostile and accurate bowling by right arm leg spinner
S.N.S. Rajaguru (5/63) and medium facer S.P.S. Amunugama (4/17) and were
bundled out for paltry 110 runs. Following on they faired little better
by scoring 193 with A. Ranil (54) and R. Thrisula (42) batting best for
them. Once again Rajaguru (6/64) and Amunugama (4/29) ran through the
inning. Set to make 47 runs in 34 in overs, the winners reached 51 for
the loss of two wickets to score the first outright win by any team in
the series in this 6th encounter.
The two teams also appeared for to photograph before the commencement
of the match. |
