Death of Swarnalatha Ilangakoon
Swarnaltha Ilangakoon - a veteran writer and educationist who held
the post of principal in several leading schools in Sri Lanka passed
away recently. She was 80 and was the wife of late journalist Sisil
Ilangakoon who served as Features Editor attached to Dinamina and
Janatha of Lake House newspapers.
An Old Girl of Maha Maya Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy and Musaeus College,
Colombo, she entered Colombo University and passed out with a degree.
Swarnalatha Ilangakoon began her professional career as a journalist
attached to Dinamina Editorial where she made her regular contributions
to women's page. As a teacher she was instrumental in lighting the
flames of education of a generation of students in so many schools.
She was the first principal of Nalanda Balika Vidyalaya, Minuwangoda
and also held the same principal post at Clington Balika Vidyalaya,
Maradana at the time of her retirement.
She has two sons Jaliya Ilangakoon and Saliya Ilangakoon. Here
remains lie at residence No. 71/C, Kaudana, Aththidiya Road, Dehiwala.
The cremation will take place tomorrow, Wednesday July 1 at 4.30 p.m.
at the General Cemetery, Mount Lavinia. |
