Third National Law Week attracts massive crowds

Several thousands of people visited the third “National Law Week” held at the Colombo Courts premises on Saturday and Sunday to obtain legal assistance from experts who were ready to help them.

The Law Week was originally launched in 2006 under State patronage with President Mahinda Rajapaksa issuing a proclamation declaring the week as “The National Law Week”. It was a resounding success with people from all walks of life around the country attending the exhibition to obtain free legal advice, exceeding the expectations of the Organizers.

Acting Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake was the Chief Guest at the third National Law Week. Several Supreme Court Judges, Court of Appeal Judges, District Judges, Magistrates and the Attorney General President’s Counsel Mohan Peiris also participated at the National Law Week.

Eager members of the public who came to the “National Law Week” with their problems found a kind and effective response at various stalls in which members of the Bar and other Government departments were ready to help.

The third “National Law Week” was organised by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) at the Colombo Court premises under the theme “People’s Right to Social Justice.”

The Law Week is the flagship event in the activity calendar of the Bar Association, illuminating the legal landscape of the country by the steadfast commitment of the legal practitioners from 74 branches countrywide to provide increased access to justice.

The main attraction of the Law Week Exhibition was that the BASL Pavilion where members of the Bar Association provided free legal advice on a voluntary basis.
