PUC for power consumers' rights

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has initiated a special program to protect electricity consumer's rights with emphasis on consumer problems, PUC Chairman Dr. Jayathissa de Costa said.

Since there existed no proper legal body in the past 100 years to protect the electricity consumers' rights, over 4.5 million people were inconvenienced, PUC sources said.

In terms of the agreement between Ceylon Electricity Board and the consumers, when providing service, consumers are assured of a quality service right throughout.

However we receive reports of failure on this undertaking from various parts of Sri Lanka due to low voltage and technical faults together with complains of high voltage of electricity resulting from damage to domestic electrical apparatus.

The PUC will hereafter look into the instances, the sources said. We will also take steps to remove the delays in providing service to domestic consumers, the sources further said.
