Work on Rambukkan Oya over before schedule

Largest irrigation project in Ampara:

Work on the Rambukkan Oya, the largest irrigation project in the Ampara District will be completed next year. The Irrigation Department has made arrangements to expedite the completion of work before schedule, Ampara District Irrigation Department Regional Director Saman Weerasinghe told the Daily News.

He said Rs. 2,500 million has been allocated for this new tank. "Out of the total amount, Rs. 2,000 million will be spent to construct the tank and the balance Rs. 500 million will be spent to provide infrastructure facilities," Weerasinghe said.

The water supply to the tank will be from a tributory of Maha Oya. The total capacity of the tank is 3,500 acres and after completion of work, 2,500 farmer families could be settled, he said. Work is in progress and on a Government directive to expedite the completion of work in the irrigation sector in the Eastern Province, the Department could complete 35 percent of the project within a short period, he said.
