TELO contesting under upfa banner

Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma yesterday said the UPFA is for the first time contesting the Vavuniya Urban Council and Jaffna Municipal Council elections under the betel leaf symbol and many political parties such as TELO will contest the election under the UPFA banner.

Addressing the media at the Mahaweli Centre, the Minister said the People in the Northern Province specially in Jaffna have unprecedented faith in the Government which created an environment for them to live in peace and harmony. He said the Government is fully confident of its victory at the upcoming Uva Provincial Council and Jaffna and Vavuniya elections. ”We sought the support of the people at the North Central, Sabaragamuwa,North Western and Western and Central Provincial Elections to continue the Government’s endevour to wipe out terrorism” , he said.

“We kept our promise and wiped out terrorism from the country and the challenge to develop the country lies ahead of us. We seek public support at the forthcoming election to bring prosperity to the country,” he said.

Minister Alahapperuma stressed that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has no intention to remain in power beyond his mandatory period under any circumstance.

He said the President is always committed to uphold democratic norms and values in the country.

Scoffing at Opposition’s allegation that the Government is trying to remain in power after its mandatory period, the Minister said the Opposition has distanced from the masses at grassroots level.

“The President was elected by the majority of people and he will never go against their mandate under any circumstances, he said.

He said the UPFA has fielded a very strong group of candidates for the forthcoming Provincial Council election and comprehensive arrangement is in place to educate the people in the province through a house to house program.

”We have already set a number of committees to augment the election campaign at district and electorate levels,” he said.
