Two books on media
Two books on media authored by journalist Darshana Ashoka Kumara will
be launched on July 2 at the National Library and Documentation Centre,
Auditorium at 3.30 p.m under the patronage of Media Minister Lakshman
Yapa Abewardhana. The books are "Vathaman Madya Adyana
Pravanatha ( Trends in contemporary media studies) and "Nawa
Kalamanakarana Sankalpa saha Pravurthi Kamaraya(New management concepts
and the Newsroom).
SLBC Charmian Hudson Samarasinghe, Dr. Tudor Weerasinghe, Mohan
Samaranayake, Karunarathna Wijewardhana will deliver speeches.
The book on trends in contemporary media studies explores various
trends such as genre studies, Narratology, Media Ownership, Public
Service Broadcasting, Marketing and Advertising, newsroom management
concepts and motivation techniques.
Ashoka Kumara is a journalist at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting
Corporation. He is a computer science graduate of the Sri
Jayawardhanapura University and obtained his MA degree from the Kelaniya
University in Mass Communication.
Book on labour law
The book titled "A Practical Guide to Labour Law" written by
Secretary General of V. Vimalarajah. The Institute of Industrial Law
will be launched on July 2 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute from 4
p.m. to 8 p.m. He is credited with more than two decades of experience
as an officer handling industrial relations and enforcement work in the
Labour Department.
He is an Arbitrator of the Industrial Court and a retired President
Labour Tribunal. Justice K. Sripavan, Supreme Court Judge will be the
Chief Guest.
The book touches on various aspects of Industrial Law and answers
several questions raised by employers and workmen in relation to issues
arising in respect of Shop and Office Employees Act, Wages Board Act,
Maternity Benefits Ordinance such as leave that a person is entitled to,
overtime payable and other related matters.
Several questions arising on Employees Provident Fund Act, Employees
Trust Fund, payment of Gratuity Act, holding of domestic inquiries have
been clarified and explained.
With regard to Labour Tribunals and Arbitration, important cases
relating to exercising of "Just and Equitable" concept in the Industrial
Dispute Act have been discussed, with references to various decisions of
the superior courts. Concepts such as whose an employee, vacation of
post and similar matters have also been analysed.
Certain novel issues such as the position of employees who enter into
contracts outside Sri Lanka for employment in Sri Lanka have also been
discussed.
Payment of compensation to employees when their employment has been
terminated unjustly has also been referred to in detail with reference
to relevant case law.
Harima Puduma Rajek comes to John de Silva

Ruwan Danansuriya's latest stage play, Harima Puduma Rajek will go on
boards John de Silva theatre on June 29 at 6.30 p.m.
The play will keep its audience wriggling in their seats with
laughter as it includes a number of comical episodes. In addition it
includes some foot tapping tunes which are composed by Punyasena
Gunasinghe and set to music by Somathilaka Silva.
Chandrasiri Kodithuwakku, Sandun Wijesiri, Premadasa Vithanage,
Namalee Danansuriya, Jeevan Handuneththi, Ariyasena Gamage, Gamini
Ambalangoda, Sanet Dikkumbura, Saman Nishantha Gunasinghe, Pavithra
Shakthi, Pathumi Chathuranga, Rangith Lakshman, Chammi Irosha, Achintha
Upul Shantha, Ajith Ranwala, Ishara Karunaratne and others will comprise
the cast. Gamini Costa is the make up artiste, Bagi Fernando and Nalinda
Rajapaksa are the stage managers and Upali Weerasinghe is in charge of
the lighting.
The costumes are by Kusum Perera and Namal Vass. The props are by
Somathilake Geetharatne. The drama is scripted by director Danansuriya
and J.A.D. Perera. |
