UNP nurtured Tigers - Minister

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe continued nurturing the LTTE terrorists even after several leaders of the party were killed by the outfit, said Media and Information Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.

Wickremesinghe did not take any action when the LTTE was violating the country's well established law and order under the pretext of Ceasefire Agreement during his tenure as Prime Minister, the Minister said.

The Minister was speaking at the weekly Cabinet press briefing at the Parliament complex yesterday.

"The UNP Leader has started remembering UNP leaders who were killed by the LTTE only after the outfit was defeated by the Government. He did not utter a single word against the terrorists when he was the Prime Minister," the Minister said.

He said the terrorists made use of this Agreement to weaken the intelligence wing by killing hundreds of intelligence officials and informants. The UNF Government under the leadership of UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe showed reluctance to take any action against the LTTE which was engaged in the conscription of children to swell its fighting ranks under the cover of CFA, the Minister said.

He said the LTTE violated the Ceasefire Agreement and set up LTTE Police stations and court complexes in the North.

The UNP leader blamed the Government and other opposition parties even after North Central Province Opposition Leader General Janaka Perera was murdered by the LTTE, he said.
