SriLankan reaches out to schools in Katunayake

SriLankan Airlines has embarked upon a program to assist children in schools around Bandaranaike International Airport to enhance their oratory and leadership skills, in the latest effort by the national carrier to uplift the development of young people throughout the country.

Members of the Airline’s Orators Club are working with children of four schools in the nearby neighbourhoods of Andiambalama, Peellawatta, Kurana, and Katunayake. With their guidance since last October each school has formed an Orators Club to further enhance their children’s skills.

SriLankan’s Head of Human Resources, Pradeepa Dahanayake said, “SriLankan Airlines has for many years been assisting schools across the country as far away as the Batticaloa, Hambantota and Ratnapura districts.

And we are now focussing on developing schools in our surrounding community as well.”

A Joint Orators Club has also been formed to encourage community based activities, networking and interaction among students of the participating schools, Andiambalama Maha Vidyalaya in Andiambalama, David Silva Primary School of Peellawatta in Andiambalama, The High School at Kurana in Katunayake and the Roman Catholic Maha Vidyalaya in Katunayake.

SriLankan Airlines and its charity arm SriLankan Cares have traditionally focused on the education of children.

SriLankan Cares recently completed construction of a Rs. 12 million building at Debarawewa Primary Navodaya Vidyalaya, a school of over 3,000 students in the Hambantota District.
