In a fast changing world with corporate restructuring and continuous
technological development, the role of Facilities Manager continues to
gain importance. Further, with the ever increasing building and
infrastructure stocks, the demand for managing these facilities have
created a growing need for Facilities Managers in Sri Lanka and overseas
with the intention of providing skilled professionals to cater this
demand, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka has commenced a Bachelor of
Science (Honours) Degree in Facilities Management under the patronage of
the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka.
The objective of establishing the B.Sc. in Facilities Management
degree course is to produce professionals who will be capable of
managing the facilities in a built environment in an effective and
efficient way. The four year full-time course is being conducted by the
Department of Building Economics of University of Moratuwa which is
well-known for producing world recognized Quantity Surveyors for nearly
two decades.
The course provides a problem based and industry focused learning,
which extends over seven semesters, under the guidance of a dedicated
team of lecturers who are specialized in a variety of fields. It also
includes 34 weeks of industrial training plus a supervised research
dissertation.
The training placements will be granted in a variety of constructed
facilities such as commercial buildings, airports, harbours, banks,
hotels, condominiums, hospitals, industrial buildings, etc. This will
enable the undergraduate to put the theories learnt in class into
practice under real working conditions, thus providing a qualified
professional with a balanced combination of academic study and hands-on
experience.
The first batch of Facilities Management undergraduates was enrolled
in year 2006 and after a successful completion of industrial training
they are now in the final year.
The second batch is currently undergoing training at many of the
leading organizations in Sri Lanka after two years of learning at the
University.
The third batch of students is being coached internally by the
specialized panel of lecturers while the fourth intake is scheduled for
mid 2009. |
