In a fast changing world with corporate restructuring and continuous technological development, the role of Facilities Manager continues to gain importance. Further, with the ever increasing building and infrastructure stocks, the demand for managing these facilities have created a growing need for Facilities Managers in Sri Lanka and overseas with the intention of providing skilled professionals to cater this demand, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka has commenced a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Facilities Management under the patronage of the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka.

The objective of establishing the B.Sc. in Facilities Management degree course is to produce professionals who will be capable of managing the facilities in a built environment in an effective and efficient way. The four year full-time course is being conducted by the Department of Building Economics of University of Moratuwa which is well-known for producing world recognized Quantity Surveyors for nearly two decades.

The course provides a problem based and industry focused learning, which extends over seven semesters, under the guidance of a dedicated team of lecturers who are specialized in a variety of fields. It also includes 34 weeks of industrial training plus a supervised research dissertation.

The training placements will be granted in a variety of constructed facilities such as commercial buildings, airports, harbours, banks, hotels, condominiums, hospitals, industrial buildings, etc. This will enable the undergraduate to put the theories learnt in class into practice under real working conditions, thus providing a qualified professional with a balanced combination of academic study and hands-on experience.

The first batch of Facilities Management undergraduates was enrolled in year 2006 and after a successful completion of industrial training they are now in the final year.
