Attack on Buddhist temple :
ACBC meet British HC
A two member delegation from the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress (ACBC)
met British High Commissioner Dr. Peter Hayes, on Friday and registered
their concern over the recent attacks on Sri Saddhatissa International
Buddhist Centre popularly known as Kingsbury ‘Buddhist Temple’ in
London.
The delegation consisted of ACBC President Jagath Sumathipala, Vice
President and Chairman International Affairs Suren Abeyagoonasekera.
The Kingsbury Temple has been attacked 10 times within this year and
three were during May 2009. There were an incidents of attacks on
business premises, and news has reached ACBC of acid attacks on two
girls.
The delegation pointed out that past British Governments has worked
closely with the Buddhist community and even commended or decorated
Buddhist scholars. The discontent and anxiety of the Sri Lankan Buddhist
community living in London was pointed out. The British High
Commissioner acknowledged concerns raised and assured close attention of
British Government.
Both parties recognised the need for a closer dialogue to eliminate
misunderstandings and improve the relationship between two countries
with respect for each other. |
