Skippers who will lead Twenty20 World Cup teams
Elmo RODRIGOPULLE Reporting from England
Gavin Hamilton Scotland/England
Hamilton bats left hand is a medium pacer. He has been classed as a
more than ordinary allrounder and his troops will depend a lot on him to
motivate them.
A free hitting middle order batsman, who will have to perform and
hold the batting together. He has played for England, Scotland, Durham
and Yorkshire and has enough experience to lead his team and spring a
surprise or two. He is a bowler who has the ability to swing the ball
both ways. Scotland are in Group D with New Zealand and South Africa.
William Porterfield Ireland
William Thomas Stuart Porterfield is a left hand bat and right arm
off break bowler. He is stylish and elegant when he gets going and is a
treat watch. In the limited over game he has two hundreds to his credit.
His brilliant 85 in the World Cup in the Caribbean enabled Ireland to
surprise the Bangladeshis.
He treasures this knock as his most memorable. Gloucestershire the
English county side saw potential in him and he has been signed to play
for them.
Ireland are in Group A with India and Bangladesh
Daniel VettorI New Zealand
Taking over from Stephen Flemming,Vettori has carried on the good
work and done his best to see that New Zealand cricket continues to
develop and progress. Vettori who can be tagged an allrounder is
following in the steps of Sir Richard Hadlee who can be classed as the
best allrounder cricketer that the Kiwiland has produced.
Sir Richard Hadlee and Chris Cairns have taken 200 wickets and scored
over 2000 runs and Vettori is in that exalted company. A clever and
tantalizing left arm spinner, he has baffled the best of batsmen with
his wily tweakers. As a batsman he has not lived up to the promise, but
has obliged when the need arose. He has two centuries under his belt. He
is a safe fielder.
Whenever Fleming was unavailable and Vettori was called upon to lead
he obliged and has led the Kiwis to memorable victories.
How he will lead in the Twenty20 Tourney would be interesting to
watch.
New Zealand are in Group D with South Africa and New Zealand
