Government to implement 13th Amendment

The Government has planned to implement the 13th Amendment to
Constitution speedily in the North, after the Local Council elections in
Jaffna and Vavuniya, Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana said.
“We took this decision at a correct time and it was not taken in a
hurry as the JVP said. This is mainly due to protecting the democratic
rights of the people in the North enabling them to elect their
representatives to the local bodies according to their wishes,” he said.
He said the resettlement process has already begun in Silavathura in
the North. Elections for the remaining local bodies will be conducted as
soon as the resettlement process is over.
The Minister said there are no Internally Displaced People in Jaffna
and Vavuniya now. Their lives have returned to normal and we would
strengthen democracy by holding elections in these areas. People who
have registered under the voters list in 2008 are eligible to cast their
votes at this election.
The Minister said Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has said
that “ everyone should forget all differences and develop the country”.
It is the best statement he has made and we should get together to
achieve our targets. “We urge the UNP to help us develop the country by
joining hands with us. Therefore, the time is ripe for the UNP to tell
the world to grant us the IMF loan to rebuild the country,” he said.
