Education of IDP children:

Task Force spends Rs. 137m

A special unit -Nenasa Sathkaraya has been set up to promote education of these children under several stages

In a bid revive the education of over 60,000 children of displaced families in the North, the Education Ministry yesterday started the Nenasa Sathkaraya program under which a consignment of school textbooks, additional reading material, uniforms, stationery, desks and chairs for teachers and children worth over Rs. 137 million were dispatched to Vavuniya in 20 lorries.

The educational needs of the children in the North will be fulfilled by this program which is conducted by the Education Ministry under the directive of the Northern Spring Presidential Task Force.

A special unit namely Nenasa Sathkaraya has been set up to promote education of these children under several stages and the yesterday’s dispatch was carried out under its Phase I.

The consignment of goods dispatched by the Education Ministry to the children of displaced families comprised 500 teacher’s desks and chairs, 5,000 children’s desks and 5,000 chairs and over 5,000 nursery packs.

The Ministry has already launched a crash program to promote the physical and human infrastructure in the educational sector. In addition a program is under way to provide reading material and stationery to over 6,000 students who are scheduled to sit for the GCE (O\L) examination this year.

Revision classes for the O\L students are being conducted by the Education Ministry.

Minister Susil Premajayanth is expected to be in Settikulam on June 05 to participate in the distribution of these items among the children of displaced families.
