Escaping prisoners shot at, one dead

One prisoner died and another was injured when prison officials opened fire on three escaping prisoners at the Fort Magistrate premises in Hulftsdorp yesterday.

The other prisoner was later arrested by Police. According to Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera, these prisoners have committed various crimes including theft and robbery and were also involved in various underworld activities.

The prisoners had attempted to flee while being taken to the prison from the Magistrate’s Courts after the proceedings of a case.
