CH in runaway 56-6 win

The Colombo Hockey and Football Club turned in a dazzling display of
open rugby to crush Havelocks Sports Club by 56 points (four goals, five
tries, one penalty) to 6 (two penalties) in their Caltex ‘A’ Division
League rugby match played at Maitland Crescent yesterday.
After being contained to a 13-6 lead at the breather CH and FC went
on the rampage in the second half to pile up another 43 points.
The lads from Maitland Crescent surged into the lead in the fourth
minute when full back Sajith Bandara fired across a 25 metre penalty. In
the 21st minute Havelocks equalised when centre Harsha Weerakkody made
no mistake with a 25 metre penalty.
Nine minutes later off a penalty awarded in the Havelocks ‘25’ CH
number eight Dilanka Wijesekera took a quick short tap and powered his
way to fall over for an unconverted try mid right.
In the 38th minute CH centre Rushika Fernando made a break in mid
field ran 30 metres and slipped out a pass to lock forward Dinesh
Sanjeewa who scored by the right corner flag. Bandara missed the
conversion and CH led 13-3.
On the stroke of half time Havelocks reduced the deficit when Harsha
Weerakkody put over a 25 metre penalty and at ‘lemons’ CH led 13-6.
In the third minute after resumption off a five metre scrum CH scrum
half Tuan Shamrock scampered through to touch down near the posts.
Bandara added the extra points (CH 20-6).
Five minutes later off a five metre scrum CH scrum half Tuan Shamrock
made a break on the blind side and slipped out a pass to the omnipresent
lock forward Dinesh Sanjeewa who scored by the right corner flag. Sajith
Bandara made a spectacular conversion to make it 27-6.
In the 17th minute of the second half CH prop forward Sathya
Ranatunge powered his way to score by the left corner flag off a second
phase move. Sajith Bandara made another brilliant conversion (CH 34-6).
Five minutes later CH hooker Achala Perera made a break in the
Havelocks ‘40’ and sent out a pass to lock forward Dinesh Sanjeewa who
powered his way to fall over for an unconverted try mid left to make it
39-6.
In the 30th minute of the second half CH winger Lakala Perera put the
finishing touches to a three quarter move by falling over for an
unconverted try by the right corner flag (CH 44-6).
Lakala Perera who was in great form scored two more tries of which
one was converted by Sajith Bandara to give CH and FC a runaway 56-6
win.
