The Memon Association of Sri Lanka (MASL) has played a key role in
keeping the unity in the community, helped to uplift the living
standards of the deserving and given credence to the members of the
community.
In 1958, the association acquired, for the first time, a building of
its own. Today, the members are proud to have a first class community
hall centrally located in the city of Colombo. The Association Hall,
which is rented out to the members at a heavily subsidised rate, is a
venue of choice for many.
In recent times the association has embarked on many social,
religious and charitable projects with a view to help the not so
fortunate members of the community. The Memon Association remains as one
of the well-preserved ethnic minority communities in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to the Daily News about the government's victory against the
LTTE, the president of the Memon Association in Sri Lanka said, "The
President and Government of Sri Lanka the Armed Forces and the Police
have been successful in eradicating and defeating terrorism in our
motherland.
This victory will be remembered by all citizens". Further commenting,
"We the members of the Memon Community express our congratulations and
our profound gratitude to the Government of Sri Lanka led by His
Excellency President Mahinda Rajapakse, all heads of the Armed Forces,
Police and the heroic servicemen for this magnificent historic victory".
As for the future, they said, "We now pray that all citizens of the
country irrespective of race, religion and other differences live in
peace, unity, harmony and dignity in our motherland Sri Lanka". |
