Key suspect arrested in Vavuniya

The Police Intelligence Unit arrested a key suspect who attempted to
assassinate Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa at Pittala junction,
Colombo in 2006.
Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said Dharmalingam
Dharmatharan alias Kili, a key suspect who attempted to assassinate the
Defence Secretary was arrested at a school in Vavuniya around 1.00 p.m.
on Wednesday.
“Kili had come along with the displaced people from the No Fire Zone
seeking protection with the Security Forces,” he added.
“As he is most wanted person, the Police Intelligence Unit of
Vavuniya identified him and arrested Kili when he was brought to the
school before being sent to an IDP centre.
“He was handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department for
further investigation,” SSP Gunasekera told the Daily News. A trishaw
laden with explosives attempted to drive into the Defence Secretary’s
motorcade and was prevented by his guards on December 01, 2006 at
Pittala junction, Kollupitiya. Two guards of the Defence Secretary were
killed in the incident.
