SL High Commissioner silences Al-Jazeera

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Canada President’s Counsel Daya Perera yesterday reiterated his Government’s call that the LTTE should lay down arms and surrender to the Security Forces before any request for a ceasefire could be considered.

He was responding to a question posed to him by an Al-Jazeera correspondent in the backdrop of a demonstration staged by some 3,000 Tamils in Ottawa urging the Sri Lankan Government to declare a ceasefire in its on going offensive against a debilitated LTTE now confined to a mere three square kilometre area in the Wanni.

The HC also queried whether the Canadian authorities would permit outfits such as the Taliban or the Hamas to parade the streets of Canada displaying their flags and ensigns as openly done by the pro-LTTE demonstrators in a major Canadian city. The Al-Jazeera correspondent had no more questions after the High Commissioner posed his question.
