Clean water for rural villages
Under the second community based clean water project undertaken by
the Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Ministry around 3.5
million people in the country will receive clean water by December 2009,
Urban Development Minister and Matale District Parliamentarian Rohana
Dissanayake said.
The Minister made these remarks at a function held at the auditorium
of Matale Pradeshiya Sabha recently.
This project is linked to the sweat and labour of the rural people.
Participation of youth from the village will ensure the successes of
this project and it will in turn bring about prosperity to the villages
they live in, the Minister said.
In addition to this water project, developing the village economy
through the establishment of village societies which provide loan
facilities, is also another unique objective behind the entire program.
This project undertaken by the Government and World Bank will
identify areas faced with water scarcity and implement the program
through these village societies.
They are the very people who will maintain and own these clean water
projects, Minister Rohana Dissanayake said. |
