More Aussie aid for displaced

The Australian Government will provide a further $ 73 million in humanitarian aid for the internally displaced people.

The money will be distributed through United Nations Agencies including UNICEF, World Food Program (WFP) and Australian Non Government Organisations (NGOs).

The aid will include $ 4 million for UNICEF, $ 2.5 million for WFP, $1.5 million to UN Agencies and $ 2 million for Australian NGOs.

The aid would be used to provide water, sanitation, shelter, food and healthcare for the needy.

Followed by the immediate humanitarian aid of $ 23.5 million provided since December 2008, the Australian Government has already donated $ 33.5 million for the displaced, the Australian Foreign Minister, Stephen Smith said.

The Japanese and Indian Governments had also provided assistance for the welfare of displaced.
