A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide funds for the
construction of three anchorages and facilities for fish unloading
centers has been signed between United Nations Office Services (UNOPS)
and the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry on Tuesday.
The occasion was held at the Ministry with the participation of UNOPS
Working Director and Sri Lanka Representative and Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources Minister Felix Perera and the officials of both parties.
The Government hopes to implement this project in line with the other
projects such as development of humanity, economy and social standards
and empowering the life of the fishing community, formulated for the
fishing communities of tsunami affected areas.
According to the MoU, the main task of the project is to finalize
what has already been initiated through the funds provided by the
International Agricultural Fund for post tsunami coastal rehabilitation
and coastal resources development and post-tsunami livelihood
development projects. The development activities are set to take place
in Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Trincomalee, Ampara and
Batticaloa districts.
