JVP suffers its worst defeat
The JVP suffered its worst defeat in the Western Provincial Council
election reducing their seats from 23 to three, National Freedom Front
leader, Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa said.
If the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress had polled another 400 votes in the
Kalutara District the JVP’s seats would be even less, JVP leadership
does not have a clear vision and they do not have a clear national
policy. Therefore, the JVP was now on a downward trend faster than the
upward trend they achieved in the past, he said.
Both Leaders of the JVP and the UNP were in the same boat, both could
not lead the party forward but only backward.
The UNP’s defeat was expected by everybody and there was nothing new
in it. For the UNP about 20 to 25 percent votes in the Western Province
was a bigger defeat but the three percent for the JVP was a greater
defeat, Weerawansa said.
The UPFA had won a two thirds majority, securing 68 seats of 102
seats in the Western Provincial Council election while all the others
have won only 34 seats, he noted. |
