Cometh the hour
cometh the Man
Wijitha NAKKAWITA
Just as the few days of a Sinhala/Hindu New year was being spent in
festive spirit by the Sri Lankans who were not under the jackboot of the
LTTE terrorists, President Mahinda Rajapaksa made an unannounced visit
to Kilinochchi which was once the administrative capital of the
terrorist group. For the past 60 years before that no Sri Lankan leader
had visited this town in the North. President Mahinda Rajapaksa's visit
was historic in more than one's sense of the word in that Prabhakaran
had boasted it was only a dream of the President who believed the armed
forces could capture the town.
Yet the prophesy of the LTTE leader was trampled under the feet of
the valiant soldiers who squashed the LTTE hardcore cadres defending
their administrative capital. It was history repeating itself.
Our rulers of the past from Rohana Desha or Ruhuna had always fought
all invading alien rulers who had set up their rule in the North, and
President Rajapaksa who believed in his own armed forces was visiting
Kilinochchi to share the joy of this historic New Year season with his
officers and soldiers, a leader from the Rohana Desha once again making
history repeat.
The Prelate of the Malwatte Chapter of the Buddhist Clergy the Most
Ven Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Maha Nayake Thera two days after the
President's Kilinochchi visit said the visit was not only good for the
soldiers but also for the people living in the North as a Head of
Government had come to see them.
The joy of the troops to find their commander in Chief and the Leader
of the country visiting them and sharing the New Year goodies was the
gift the President had for this new year.
The nation watched in amazed joy the President with the armed forces
not only mingling with the troops but also inspecting the vast haul of
arms and ammunition captured from the terrorists.
Finally it was Prabhakaran who had his dream shattered while all
right-thinking citizens of Sri Lanka shared the joy of their President
visiting Kilinochchi to give them the assurance that democracy had won
and terrorism was defeated never to raise its ugly head.
