in a worldwide poll which was organised by FIFA and he was adjudged the
most widely known Footballer of the modern age.

Diego Maradona led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup Championship and
brought them again to the World Cup Finals in 1990.
Maradona was born on October 30, 1960 in Villa Florito, Buenos Aires
Argentina. He started playing football in his boyhood days. In 1970
ten-year-old Maradona joined the local junior team. Six years later he
made his debut in the first division tournament in Argentina.
Highest paid footballer
On February 27, 1977, he made his international debut for Argentina
He played for Boca Juniors in 1981 next year he joined Spanish Top
Club Barcelona. In 1984 he played for Napoli, Italy.
Maradona had become the highest paid footballer of that era, in 1982
Barcelona had paid 50 lakhs Pounds, while in 1984 Nepoli paid him a
heavy sun of 69 lakhs of Pounds.
Maradona scored 319 goals in his illustrious professional career 1976
to 80 for Argentine Juniors 166 matches scoring 116 goals, 1981/82 Boca
Juniors, 40 matches and 28 goals, 1982 to 84 for Barcelona 58 matches
scoring 38 goals, 1984 to 1991 for Napoli 259 matches scoring 115 goals,
1992/93 for Sevilla, 29 matches scoring 15 goals, 1995 to 1997 he played
for Boca Juniors 29 matches and scored 7 goals.
World Cup hero
In the 1986 World Cup Tournament in Mexico, Diego Maradona scored
goals in the quarter finals, Semi-finals and the final Argentina met
Germany in the World Cup final and scores were tied at 2-2. Maradona
made the pass that set up the winning goal.

The 1986 World Cup was called the Maradona's Cup and he was named
world footballer of the year.
In 1993 he was adjudged Best Argentine Footballer ever. Next year he
received the Golden Ball for his achievements.
In 1994 World Cup he was Banned for failing a drug test during the
tournament and sent home.
Maradona whose fame as a spectacular footballer gave way to tales of
drug abuse in recent years. He was admitted to drug rehabilitation
centre in Cuba.
In October 30, 1997, Maradona retired from Professional Football.
