Constitution needs change - Chief Minister

The sitting of the fortnightly meeting of the North Western
Provincial Council was held at the “Sasri” Hall on April 7.
The Chairman R.D. Wimaladasa presided.
Chief Minister Athula Wijesinghe opening the meeting said the present
constitution has not been provided enough room to exercise their
mandate. The new constitution which ensures the democratic rights of the
people, should be created. Steps should be taken by President Mahinda
Rajapaksa to change this constitution created by late President J.R.
Jayewardene.
He said the Government should give priority to this issue and
according to the Provincial Council Act there is not a post as
Opposition Leader under the Constitution Act No. 13.
All UNP members walked out in protest against the constitution.
D.B. Herath (UPFA) facing the situation and said I will not forget
the needs of the people who reposed their faith and confidence in me.
They have given me an opportunity to prove my mettle and soon
development projects will be started to provide all amenities and
facilities for residents in the Wariyapola electorate.
Gunadasa Dehigama (UPFA) said proportional representation system
introduced by late President J.R. Jayawardene was very harmful to
minority people. According to this situation people have no democratic
rights to change away corrupted politicians who have not done anything
for their electorates. That is why the Govt. is trying to elect genuine
representatives.
Asoka Wadigamangawa, Minister of Health, Indigenous Medicine, Sports
and Youths said Sri Lanka has given the best example to the entire world
on how to combat terrorism by safety and the security of the civilians.
Abdeen Ahiya Seynul said (UNP) we believe in democracy. We want to
win our rights in a democratic manner.
Gunadasa Dehigama (UPFA) Provincial Council must be changed very
soon. It is not suitable for rural areas. |
