Constitution needs change - Chief Minister

The sitting of the fortnightly meeting of the North Western Provincial Council was held at the “Sasri” Hall on April 7.

The Chairman R.D. Wimaladasa presided.

Chief Minister Athula Wijesinghe opening the meeting said the present constitution has not been provided enough room to exercise their mandate. The new constitution which ensures the democratic rights of the people, should be created. Steps should be taken by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to change this constitution created by late President J.R. Jayewardene.

He said the Government should give priority to this issue and according to the Provincial Council Act there is not a post as Opposition Leader under the Constitution Act No. 13.

All UNP members walked out in protest against the constitution.

D.B. Herath (UPFA) facing the situation and said I will not forget the needs of the people who reposed their faith and confidence in me. They have given me an opportunity to prove my mettle and soon development projects will be started to provide all amenities and facilities for residents in the Wariyapola electorate.

Gunadasa Dehigama (UPFA) said proportional representation system introduced by late President J.R. Jayawardene was very harmful to minority people. According to this situation people have no democratic rights to change away corrupted politicians who have not done anything for their electorates. That is why the Govt. is trying to elect genuine representatives.

Asoka Wadigamangawa, Minister of Health, Indigenous Medicine, Sports and Youths said Sri Lanka has given the best example to the entire world on how to combat terrorism by safety and the security of the civilians.

Gunadasa Dehigama (UPFA) Provincial Council must be changed very soon. It is not suitable for rural areas.
