Bloomfield rout Tamil Union

Bloomfield clinched the SLC Coca Cola Premier limited overs cricket title when they completely outplayed Tamil Union by a convincing margin of 115 runs in the final worked off at the R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday.

Bloomfield rattled up a competitive 244 for 9 from their 50 overs after electing to bat first and then produced a tremendous performance on the field to skittle out their opponents for a paltry 129 runs in the 35th over.

In fact this final turned out to be a completely one sided contest as Tamil Union failed to put up a fight and at least get closer towards their opponents total. But instead they surrendered quite meekly and folded up against the pace of Chinthaka Jayasinghe, Roshan Fernando and Tharanga Lakshitha with 15 overs to spare.

In fact Tamil Union were virtually out of the contest even before the half way stage of the innings after they had lost half of the side for just 84 runs. This was mainly due to some splendid seam bowling from the two opening bowlers Jayasinghe and Fernando who ripped through the Tamil Union top order within the first seven overs. Tamil Union never recovered from this early setback and were always behind the required run rate despite a stubborn effort from Lanka de Silva and Jeewan Mendis who put on 63 runs for the fifth wicket.

But Tharanga Lakshitha came back for an inspired second spell to put an end to their resistance while Shanuka Dissanayake wrapped up the innings by snapping up two quick wickets. Earlier Bloomfield recovered from a middle order collapse to post a respectable 244 for 9 from their 50 overs. They were struggling to reach the 150 run mark at one stage after having slumped to 106 for 6 by the half way stage of the innings.

However Sanjaya Gangodawila batting at number nine hit a top score of 70 not out from just 46 deliveries inclusive of two sixes and ten boundaries to take them pass the two hundred run mark. He frustrated the Tamil Union bowlers by putting on 68 runs for the last wicket along with Roshan Fernando. Gangodawila earned the Man of the Match award for his batting heroics while his teammate Chinthaka Jayasinghe took the Player of the Series award.
