The little hero from Mahiyangana nine-year-old Dinesh Sandakelum who saved the lives of three elders who were on the verge of drowning in a canal, was rewarded with a fully sponsored educational scholarship to enter Nalanda College, Colombo recently. Dinesh met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat on March 16. The People’s Bank Sisu Udana program donated Rs. 200,000 and Nalanda OBA donated Rs. 500,000 for his studies. Yala paddy crop 50 percent more

Military victories boost production:

Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services Minister Maithripala Sirisena told Parliament yesterday, paddy production of the 2008 Yala season has shown a 50 per cent increase compared with the 2007 Yala paddy harvest, due to moves taken by the Government to cultivate a large extent of fallow paddy lands under the Government’s national food production drive Api Wawamu Rata Nagamu.
