Professional work promotes social stability - Minister Devananda

Professional social work promotes social change as well as social
stability. It is important to remember that principles of human rights
and social justice as well as responsibility and collective harmony are
fundamental to social work, Social Services and Social Welfare Minister
Douglas Devananda said.
Minister Devananda was addressing a ceremony held at the BMICH,
Colombo yesterday in connection with awarding of certificates to
students who had completed the Higher Diploma in Social Work conducted
by the National Institute of Social Development (NISD).
He said that it is the Social Services and Social Welfare Ministry
which produces the much needed professional social workers at the moment
who provide a great service to the nation at a time they are most
needed.
According to Minister Devananda the social work profession depends
upon the ability of social workers to effectively work with the
oppressed and underprivileged communities and individuals, strengthening
them to claim their rights and entitlements with outcomes such as
equalizing social, political and economic disparities.
The students who obtained the higher diploma are well versed in
knowledge, values and skills of professional social work and are ready
to practice their profession in an ethical and effective manner with
responsibility, the Minister added.
