Professional social work promotes social change as well as social stability. It is important to remember that principles of human rights and social justice as well as responsibility and collective harmony are fundamental to social work, Social Services and Social Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda said.

Minister Devananda was addressing a ceremony held at the BMICH, Colombo yesterday in connection with awarding of certificates to students who had completed the Higher Diploma in Social Work conducted by the National Institute of Social Development (NISD).

He said that it is the Social Services and Social Welfare Ministry which produces the much needed professional social workers at the moment who provide a great service to the nation at a time they are most needed.

According to Minister Devananda the social work profession depends upon the ability of social workers to effectively work with the oppressed and underprivileged communities and individuals, strengthening them to claim their rights and entitlements with outcomes such as equalizing social, political and economic disparities.

The students who obtained the higher diploma are well versed in knowledge, values and skills of professional social work and are ready to practice their profession in an ethical and effective manner with responsibility, the Minister added.

Social Services and Social Welfare Ministry Secretary V. Jegarasasingam, Director General, NISD, M.A. Allam and several others were present.
