Halpita to become model village under Gama Neguma program

The Government has earmarked to develop Halpita village in the
Kesbewa Divisional Secretariat area under the Gama Neguma program this
year.
This program is in accordance with the Government's initiative to
have a fully developed village in each Divisional Secretariat Division.
All infrastructure facilities such as pipe borne water and electricity
will be provided to this village.
The Colombo District Secretariat in coordination with Kesbewa
Divisional Secretariat and the Janasabhawa are implementing the project.
A series of livelihood and moral development projects are expected to be
launched in Halpita under the Gama Neguma.
According to the Planning Director of the Colombo District
Secretariat, this village will become a model of development in the
district. All problems of the public in the village would be addressed,
he said.
The Colombo District Secretariat has sought three development
proposals from GN divisions to be implemented under the Gama Neguma
Program. The Nation Building Ministry has allocated Rs. 700,000 for each
GN division in addition to the funds provided by the several line
ministries.
The Colombo district which consists of over 500 GN divisions accounts
for heavy volume of production and goods and services. The Government
has given priority to villages in the district which still lacks proper
infrastructure facilities. Rs. 248 million was allocated for the
development of these villages last year.
The Gama Neguma program equally focused more emphasis on the
livelihood and spiritual development in the district last year.
Industrial in the district have also gained tremendous upsurge with the
implementation of infrastructure development projects under this
program.
The Government allocated Rs. 200 million for 541 road development
projects in the district last year and all projects were completed and
vested in the people. The rehabilitation of canals in the Kotte and
Colombo Municipality received prominence.
The Government invested Rs. 16.90 million in the rehabilitation of
irrigation canals in the district which gave tremendous boost for the
flood control in the urban areas under the Gama Neguma.
Thousands of farmers in the Homagama, Kaduwela and Kesbewa DS
Divisions where paddy farming is still thriving were benefited by the
rehabilitation and dredging of irrigation canals in the respective
areas. |
