Woman files case against People's Bank
SANDASEN MARASINGHE
A woman filing a plaint before the Colombo District Court alleged
that a minor's deposit account opened in her name 22 years ago at the
People's Bank was disowned by the bank.
D. L. C. Maduwanthi Dissanayake (33) of Nawala Road, Rajagiriya
filing the plaint cited People's Bank as the respondent.
The plaintiff submitted before Court that her father opened an
Extended Deposit Account - Minors in her name on January 26, 1981 with a
deposit of Rs. 15,000. She had the pass book with her and after 22 years
her account should have Rs. 385,000.
Further the plaintiff stated that her father was not in good health
and when she wanted to withdraw the money, the Bank informed her on June
20, 2000 that she had no account under the instant account number in her
pass book.
The account number she produced belonged to someone else, the bank
said.
She prayed before Court to declare that she had right to receive Rs.
385,000 from the bank.
The People's Bank filing answers stated that the plaintiff had not
account under her name but it was someone's else's account number she
was submitting. So the defendant prayed before the Court to dismiss the
plaint.
Colombo Additional District Judge Ayeshani Jayasena put off the case
for June 3, 2009. |
